A Bit of History

On May 23, 1706, the village of Ramillies became the scene of a decisive clash in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), a conflict triggered by the death of Charles II without an heir and the accession to the throne of Philip V, grandson of Louis XIV. Facing France and Spain, the Grand Alliance (England, the Dutch Republic, the Emperor, and their allies) sought to prevent the dynastic union of Europe’s two greatest kingdoms. Confident, Louis XIV entrusted his finest army to Marshal de Villeroy, who, convinced that Marlborough was a second-rate general, left his defensive lines and accepted battle. Along a front of more than 6 km, between marshes to the north and open plains to the south, the engagement turned thanks to a now-famous maneuver: Marlborough discreetly concentrated his cavalry in the south, achieved overwhelming superiority (108 squadrons against 63), and shattered the elite of the French cavalry. The retreat turned into panic; by evening, the disorganized French army withdrew toward Leuven. The consequences were dramatic: heavy losses, evacuation of cities, and within a few months the Allies seized almost all of Flanders and Brabant. Ramillies did not end the war, but it marked a major moral and political turning point. Come and commemorate the 320th anniversary of this day that changed the course of Europe’s destiny.
